Joint Mobilisation

Musculoskeletal Treatments

INJURY to the foot and ankle may result in joints feeling sore, which may be temporary or longer lasting. Non-injury reasons for joint pain and restriction can include arthritis, especially rheumatoid type and other conditions such as Lupus.

SYMPTOMS in walking or running can feel like crunching, swelling, clicking or sharp pain when doing certain movements in activities.

MOBILISING of joints usually is a gentle but firm gliding of one bone of the joint in a direction that will gently stretch the tight joint tissues.

AIM of the mobilisation is to improved the ease of gliding of a joint and for that improvement to have a positive affect when you are walking or running.

As an MSK podiatrist I have utilised and taught joint mobilisation for much of my career. Joint mobilisation is usually part of an overall treatment program, utilised when it is really needed.

Treatment benefits

  • It can be used to aid reduction in pain
  • Reduce stiffness so that the foot bends and moves better when walking / running / dancing.
  • Reduce the stress and strain to muscles that work near or around a joint
  • Can help restore easier movement in the foot and ankle so that walking improves after injury or periods of being immobile or after foot surgery.
